At the Whitman Mission, National Park Service rangers stopped commemorating the date - and redesigned the displays - … The indians took it into their own hands and they killed fourteen whites, including the Whitmans, and burnt down the mission buildings. Whitman had received repeated warnings of the impending massacre, both from friendly Indians and the Hudson’s Bay men. But apparently he paid no heed. This was an unusual occurence.

The Whitman’s took advantage of the Cayuse Indians’ kindness by selfishly taking over their land and using their resources without reimbursing them.
